A potential new bird for the recording area!
Windsurf Pit - At 6.00am in foggy conditions Phil Palmer heard a warbler singing loudly from an Oak tree along the track between the Widsurf Pit and Chainbridge NR Scrape which he recognised as being the song of an ICTERINE WARBLER. At around 9.00am he returned to the same area now clearing from the fog earlier and again heard the same song coming from the tops of a Willow tree in the SE corner of the Windsurf Pit. Trying to locate the loudly singing bird in the canopy he then watched a Blackcap harrass it and force it lower in the Willow where it was lost from view further along the line of Willows on the southern edge of the pit. Unfortunately Phil had to leave the site but allerted others and the paging services of his find. Unfortunately the bird was not relocated throughout the remainder of the day despite getting the attention of many visiting birdwatchers. Phil is very familier with the calls of ICTERINE WARBLER having heard and recorded them many times in Europe and is 100% sure of the call id but unfortunately he could not get any physical description of this bird being in the tree canopy. Poor weather last night may have grounded this European migrant briefly and it probably soon left the area as the weather improved. Also here today were 6 Red-Crested Pochard, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 20+ Swift and a Turtle Dove. Neatholme Pit - 10 Pink-footed Geese. Neatholme Lane - Garden Warbler, 3 Lesser Whitethroat.
